Hawaii Non-Profits Received $1.1 Million, U.S. Mainland Charities $200,000
HONOLULU February 3, 2010 The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation donated $1.3 million to non-profit organizations in Hawaii and on the U.S. Mainland during the past year, concluding a decade of donations totaling more than $18 million.
Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Stanley M. Kuriyama, who serves on the A&B Foundations Hawaii Committee, said, A&Bs sustained support of local charities is another expression of our long-term commitment to Hawaii and its many communities. While our recent corporate performance has not escaped the impacts of the economic downturn over the last two years, it is important that we continue to allocate meaningful resources to our charitable giving program. A&B is pleased to provide support through its Foundation for worthy causes that improve the quality of life in the communities in which A&B employees and shareholders live, and in which our businesses operate.
$1.1 million of the Foundations giving was provided to charities serving a broad range of community needs in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. An additional $200,000 was granted to non-profits on the U.S. Mainland.
We invite you to take a look at the broad spectrum of community needs that the Foundation supports, said A&B Foundation President Meredith J. Ching. For a listing of 2009 individual grants, visit www.alexanderbaldwinfoundation.org
Ching added, We were cognizant of the increased social problems created in this economic environment, so we focused on family needs. Half of the Foundations 2009 resources ($640,000) were allocated to address peoples most basic needs -- housing, food, health care, and family support services.
Ching continued, Always important to our Foundation is the education of our youth. More than a quarter of a million dollars was provided to all levels of education: pre-school funding; school supplies for grade school students from low-income families; scholarship and athletic programs for high schools; job-retraining programs at our community colleges and higher education at both public and private universities. Not to be forgotten were classroom teachers, via funds that supported teacher grant programs and enriched teaching resources in our schools.
Grants made by the A&B Foundation are made possible by the business activities of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc.
